Reaction Time Test Guide

What is a reaction time test?

A reaction time test measures the delay between seeing a signal and responding to it. In this reflex test, you wait for the visual signal and then tap or click as quickly as possible.

Your result is displayed in milliseconds. The shorter the delay between the signal and your response, the lower your recorded reaction time for that attempt.

How to test your reaction speed

  1. 1. Start the reaction time test.
  2. 2. Wait while the game tells you to hold.
  3. 3. Do not tap or click before the signal.
  4. 4. React immediately when the signal appears.
  5. 5. Check your result in milliseconds.
  6. 6. Hit AGAIN and try to beat your best time.

How is reaction time measured?

Reaction Time = Response Time − Signal Time

The timer starts internally when the visual signal appears and stops when your input is detected. The difference between those two moments is your recorded reaction time.

What do milliseconds mean?

One second contains 1,000 milliseconds. A result of 250 ms, for example, represents a quarter of a second between the signal and the recorded response. Lower results indicate faster responses within this test.

False starts and early clicks

The signal appears after a random waiting period, so trying to predict exactly when it will appear can lead to a false start. If you tap or click too early, the attempt is cancelled and you need to restart.

Why can reaction test results vary?

Your recorded result can change between attempts. Attention and anticipation can affect your response, while the device itself can add variation through its display, browser and input hardware.

For a more useful comparison of your own attempts, use the same device and input method and repeat the test several times.

Frequently asked questions

What is a reaction time test?

A reaction time test measures the delay between a signal appearing and your response to that signal. This test records that delay in milliseconds.

How does this reaction speed test work?

Start the test and wait for the signal. The moment the game tells you to react, tap or click as quickly as possible. The elapsed time is recorded in milliseconds.

What does ms mean in a reaction time test?

ms means milliseconds. One second contains 1,000 milliseconds, so a lower millisecond result represents a faster recorded response in that attempt.

What happens if I click too early?

Clicking before the signal counts as a false start. Restart the test and wait for the visual signal before reacting.

Can I take the reflex test on mobile?

Yes. You can tap the game area on a phone or tablet, or use a mouse or trackpad on a computer.

Why does my reaction time change between attempts?

Reaction test results can vary from attempt to attempt. Attention, anticipation, input hardware, display behavior and browser performance can all affect the recorded result.
